Arteaga’s Food Center is a family-owned business built on tradition, hard work, and a commitment to serving our community.
Our Founding Story
In 1972, Alfredo Lopez arrived in the United States from Mexico with a dream: to build a better life for his family. After years of hard work and dedication, Alfredo opened his first grocery store in 1993 in Newark, CA, originally named Chavez Meat Market.
As the business grew, Alfredo decided to honor his wife, Maria Guadalupe Lopez Arteaga, by renaming the store Arteaga's Food Center. From a single store, the Lopez Family expanded Arteaga's to nine locations across Northern California, embodying the American Dream.
Today, Arteaga's is still a family business, run with love and dedication by Alfredo's wife, children, and grandchildren. We proudly carry on his legacy, serving our communities with fresh quality food and genuine hospitality-because our customers are part of our family too.
Arteaga's Today
In 2025, Arteaga's Food Center introduces its first bakery location, Pan y Café. What started out as an idea has now become a reality in Newark, California. Pan y Café was created to bring our community together over the simple joy of fresh bread, rich Latin American coffee, and homemade pastries. Every recipe is inspired by the authentic flavors and traditions our customers have come to love from
Arteaga’s—now baked fresh each morning.

We are proud to partner with Clayton Coffee & Tea, a locally respected roaster known for its commitment to quality, sustainability, and community. Clayton Coffee sources premium beans from ethical and environmentally responsible farms around the world, carefully roasting each batch to bring out its unique character and flavor. Their dedication to fair trade practices and eco-conscious production aligns perfectly with our values, ensuring every cup we serve is not only rich in taste but also responsibly crafted. Together, we share a passion for excellence, authenticity, and making every coffee experience something to truly savor.
